HOW TO APPLY OR INTAKE TURMERIC?
Luckily turmeric is very accessible on any market today, you can find it in many forms such as teas, pills, creams and balms, powder and juices. Turmeric is not water-soluble which means its difficult for our body to absorb it apart from meals. But don't worry because very simple to pair it up so our body absorbs it quickly and get all the benefits turmeric has to offer. Here are some tips:
Take it with black pepper
Black pepper contains piperine which ensures turmeric to be absorbed 20 times better by our body. Just a pinch of pepper is enough and this will skyrocket turmerics benefits in your body.
Take if with a healthy fat
Since turmeric is does not dissolve with water consuming it with a healthy fat will ensure that turmeric is absorbed directly into tour bloodstream through the lymphatic system. So pair turmeric with a healthy fat such as coconut, flaxseed or avocado oil.
Tip: My favourite way is to ad just a little bit of coconut oil to my golden milk or adding coconut oil and turmeric when roasting veggies.
Consume it fresh
All thought turmeric powder is easier to incorporate in your cooking and drinks I always prefer some fresh turmeric over powder since consuming it fresh helps our body to digest it easier with our having to add any extra fat to out diet ad it tastes better. ( Tip for those on a low fat diet!)
HOW MUCH TURMERIC SHOULD I CONSUME IN A DAY?
As turmeric is a superfood the body breaks it down very fast.
Fresh turmeric: 1.5 to 3 grams per day
Turmeric powder: 1 to 3 grams per day
Translated int o teaspoons this is about 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp per day from dried turmeric powder or 1 tbsp of fresh grated turmeric root per day.
PRO TIP: Always buy turmeric that does not have any GMO, additives or fillers. And always buy it in smaller quantities instead of bulking your spice cabinet with turmeric. This is because turmeric loses its natural taste when stored for long periods of time.
Some of my favourite ways to add it to my diet are:
- Sprinkle it on top of veggies with some coconut oil before frying or baking them.
- Adding it to my morning lemon tea: I add few slices of ginger, 1 tsp turmeric powder, Juice of half a lemon, 1/2 tsp coconut oil, 1 tsp of maple syrup and hot water. I give everything a good stir and let it set for 3 min. And there you have it a turmeric and ginger morning tonic!
